Andrew Campbell

Cyberpsychology Research Group

Associate Professor Andrew Campbell has been researching and teaching Cyberpsychology for over 20 years. With his partnership with IDCARE Andrew works to expand training and research in Cyber Security, specifically around the focus of online deception and anti-scam initiatives. He is the Chair of Australia’s first Cyberpsychology Research Group (CRG) located within the research theme of Biomedical Informatics & Digital Health in School of Medical Sciences in the Faculty of Medicine & Health at The University of Sydney. Andrew is also an adjunct Professor in Cyberpsychology with Asia Pacific University, Malaysia.  He is the Inaugural Australasian Editor of the journal Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking and is a registered psychologist with experience in child and adolescent mental health.

Andrew is a leading researcher in Australia and overseas in the innovative use of consumer technology for psychological and health improvement. Using his clinical experience to inform research projects involving behavioural impact of virtual reality, video games, social networking, smart-phones, and wearable technology to positively influence mental health outcomes of individuals and systems. Andrew has been able to work as an innovation and design partner with the Collaborative Research Centre of Young and Well (2010-2016), where in 2013 he developed national policy around using technology safely to promote young people’s mental health and wellbeing. In 2017 he formed the Cyberpsychology Research Group which has been a core research partner for such organisations as Kids Helpline, Save the Children’s Fund International, CSIRO, Family Law Court Circuit of Australia, SANE Australia, NSW Health, and the Centre for Research Excellence in Adolescent Health at Children’s Hospital Westmead.

In 2017 Andrew won the Australian Psychological Society (APS) for Outstanding Psychology Lecturer in NSW, as well as the Faculty of Health Sciences (now Sydney School of Health Sciences) Outstanding Lecturer for teaching in Health Sciences and Cyberpsychology & eHealth. In 2018 he was made a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK. In collaboration with yourtown: Kids Helpline, he won the 2020 BUPA Health Foundation, $1million research grant for developing a world first, custom built, social media platform called ‘MyCircles’ to provide group counselling to Australian youth aged 13 – 25. In 2023 he won the Sydney University Postgraduate Representative Association (SUPRA) Outstanding Supervisor award for Higher Degree students.

Andrew is dedicated to the growth of the multidiscipline area of cyberpsychology and is thankful in being able to work between academia and industry to grow translational research specifically in the fields of adaptive AI, social media and future tech.
